Shayna King is a singer-songwriter - though not in the traditional sense. Backed by a proficient band and with a voice described as a “stunning mix between soft and powerful” (1), the Christchurch artists' self-produced new single 'Calling You' is receiving top reviews.
Recorded at Christchurch's Quicksand Recording Studio, ‘Calling You' is described as a "beautiful, melodic and mesmerising piece of work" (2) and "a very radio ready track that I would compare to the likes of Anika Moa and Anna Coddington" (3).
After debuting at #6 on the iTunes chart on its release, ‘Calling You’ spent four weeks in New Zealand’s Top Ten IMNZ Airplay Chart and also featured on Air New Zealand’s domestic and international flights for a number of weeks.
The accompanying music video was released 20th January 2015 in the lead-up to Kings South Island Summer Tour. The video was filmed and directed by Boon Boon Creative and showcases an array of stunning Canterbury locations, from grassy mountaintops to the flatland plains, forest and stoney beaches of the Banks Peninsula.
Kings debut album 'The Day Is Young' was released late 2013 and was nominated for the prestigious 2014 Taite Music Prize, with the title track also selected as a semi-finalist in the International Unsigned Only Songwriting Competition.
The album was supported with a national tour for NZ Music Month 2014 and debuted at #6 on the iTunes charts, #14 on the Official New Zealand Album charts and #9 on the IMNZ Independent Album Charts.
Having recently played support for New Zealand Artist-Collective ‘Fly My Pretties’, UK Legend ‘Nik Kershaw’ and Australia’s ‘Mark Wilkinson’, King has had a busy summer promoting her new single, touring the South Island with her full band and headlining a show at Christchurch's Ingham Lazy Sundays. She is currently in the process of writing new material set for release late 2015.

"'Calling You' really is good - and that just about sums it up in one word. There is a prominent market for Shayna’s music - especially with summer growing closer by the day and she is growing stronger with each release
that I have heard".
"Bound to remain in your head long after it’s finished blasting from your speakers or headphones. 'Calling You’ is a beautiful, melodic and mesmerising piece of work that will cast your mind straight to those memories of summer and the days of sunbathing, swimming and running around at the beach."

"Worth every second. A remarkable release from an emerging artist. I for one am intrigued with what will come next. "
